I recently had a conversation with a woman at work regarding why we watch so much TV. She said she believes that it is because we are longing for adventure and I happen to agree with her. I have noticed it myself in my times of watching TV. I end up glued to the TV and wishing that I was part of whatever action and adventure is happening. I don’t feel that I need or want to watch TV when I’m out doing things and experiencing life (outside of work). But, why? Because I’m busy living and creating my own adventure.
We were made to live life and experience it as best as we can. When we get caught in the monotony of life, we miss out on so much. There is importance in going to work and doing our jobs but at the same time, there is supposed to be adventure. And sometimes your job is part of that adventure.
We should not come home at the end of every day and plop down in front of the TV just to watch others live out our dreams on the screen. That’s not to say we can’t do it from time to time, but it shouldn’t consume our whole lives.
Sometimes we do get caught in this trap because we crave adventure but we can often get lazy and use excuses like we just can’t, or we say we don’t have time. We do need rest and we do need to let our brains and bodies to take a break, but we should not get stuck here. We think that we can’t or should not experience adventure. Except that the Lord wants and us to live life to its fullest. He wants us to have adventures and awesome experiences.
Books, television, blogs, magazines, etc. can be great, but I think they should only motivate us. They shouldn’t be the ways we experience life.
And it’s more than us just trying to escape reality. It’s us wanting to truly experience reality and life, and reaching beyond the mundane things of life. Now for some, the mundane things of life can be an adventure. For example, the idea of a husband and family, which some find mundane, is an adventure to me. Mainly because I have neither. Some may find it boring if they have these things now and they may long for the single days where they could go wherever they want, whenever they want, without having to answer to anyone.
At times, I find myself watching shows that are full of adventure and action and things that I wish that I could do or experience. My favorites are shows that give me an adrenaline rush. I enjoy cop shows and the medical shows. They are interesting to me. I think it’s because I long for something like that.
I long for something that is going to provide me with excitement and make me feel full of life. I long for something that will give me purpose and make me feel like I am making a difference. I think that is why the medical and cop shows fascinate me. To me, they symbolize, in the most practical of senses, my desire to help people and fix them. I wish my hands and my brain could wrap around the medical terminology and the ability to surgically repair someone. Or with a cop show, solve the crime and bring people to justice.
There may be different types of shows that fascinate you. Maybe it’s a cooking show or an outdoor show. Why? Because it’s interesting to you and it would be an adventure and a challenge for you. So take the chance, get the ingredients, and go make the food in your own kitchen. Go hike that mountain or bike the trail that you have been longing to experience.
We were created to experience the world around us and not just watch someone else live it on a screen. I don’t want to live vicariously through someone else. I want to live my life. Isn’t it better to go live life than to watch someone live out the life that you hope for?
I want to take the chance and do something that I never thought I could do or go somewhere that I have never been to before. It’s time to get off the couch and experience what is outside our apartments and homes. Go and experience the world. Take a chance and move to a new city. Pursue the job you want. Do what the Lord has called you to do. Do not settle for less in life. Experience it to the fullest.
